Gingers (Zingiber officinale) are a flowering plant whose rhizome, ginger root or simply ginger, is widely used as a spice or in folk medicine.

Ginger plants are herbaceous perennials which grow annual pseudostems (false stems made of the rolled bases of leaves) about 1 to 1.5 metres tall with narrow leaf blades. The inflorescences (group or cluster of flowers on a stem) bear flowers and arise directly from the rhizome on separate shoots. Ginger is in the family Zingiberaceae. Zingiberaceae also includes turmeric (Curcuma longa), cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum), and galangal which can be a great addition to a spice or herb garden. Ginger originated in the tropical rainforests from the Indian subcontinent to Southern Asia where ginger plants show considerable genetic variation. Gingers can be edible, medicinal or purely ornamental, whatever your landscape needs. There is a brief description of each available plant when you click the plant you are considering for your garden ideas below.

Because of Ginger’s aesthetic appeal and the adaptation of the plant to warm climates, it is often used as a landscaping feature in the garden or nursery around subtropical homes. It is a perennial reed-like plant with annual leafy stems, about 1-1.5M tall.
