Blue Quandong
Elaeocarpus grandis (20m*EdAbcD) Blue Quandong is a towering wonder of the rainforest, the Blue Quandong dazzles with its luminous blue fruits and elegant, fringed white flowers. The blossoms, appearing from March to June, are delicately fringed and emit a subtle fragrance. These are followed by spherical, iridescent edible blue drupes in spring, each about 2–3 cm in diameter loved by Rainforest Pigeons. Staple aboriginal food for thousands of years and today is mainly used in jams and the like. The tree’s glossy green leaves turn a striking red before falling, adding year-round visual interest. Reaching heights of 30–35 meters, it thrives in subtropical climates and tolerates light frost. Its rapid growth and open canopy make it ideal for large gardens and rainforest regeneration projects.
Secret surprise: The fruit’s brilliant blue hue isn’t due to pigment but results from microscopic structures that reflect light, a phenomenon known as structural coloration.
